Help the Environment (Part 1): Keep Your Lawn Healthy
Helping the environment has got to be a priority. With a report out recently urging companies, governments and individuals to change before the world reaches the point of no return, it’s now more important than ever for each individual to do their part to help the environment. Keeping your lawn healthy is a fantastic way to start.
Lawns made from natural grass not only look fantastic, but are sustainable and contribute to the health of the environment.
Why is a Healthy Lawn Good for the Environment?
The Current Situation
One of the key problems our world is facing is the rise in CO2, which is causing damage to our ozone layer and increasing the temperature of the world. The temperature of the planet has already increased by 1 degree, but if we can keep it from increasing by another 0.5 degrees by the end of the century, we can keep the planet from widespread disaster.
We’re currently on track to exceed this by 2030.
This will lead to the poorest parts of the world (those that have little power to change global warming) facing floods, drought, famine and an increase in serious and extreme weather conditions, such as hurricanes. Lives will be lost. It will cause species to become extinct, impact the food we can grow and eat in Western society, and lead to entire cities being flooded.
This seems like a big task, but every individual can help through simple steps. This includes eating less meat, walking when you can, using a washing line rather than a tumble dryer and even things as simple as keeping your lawn healthy.
Your Lawn Makes a Difference
One lawn is made up of hundreds of individual plants. Unlike humans and other animals, plants use CO2 and release oxygen, through the process of photosynthesis. Therefore, they reduce the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. The more healthy lawns there are, the bigger an impact this has!
It might sound like one healthy lawn can have little impact, but lawn’s are incredibly efficient at producing oxygen and using CO2. In a day, just 2.5m2 of lawn can produce all the oxygen an adult needs in the same time period. We think that’s amazing!
Lawns currently use 5% of the world’s CO2 every year, which goes a long way in helping the environment. Your lawn can make a difference.

In order for your lawn to have the greatest positive impact upon the environment it can, you need to keep it as healthy as possible.
Seasonal Treatments
Seasonal treatments are one of the best ways to keep your lawn healthy all year round. We could go into every detail of how to keep your lawn healthy each season – such as moss control, growth stimulation, weed treatment, fertilising and fungal protection – but instead of worrying about each individual part, you can have an expert do it for you. Aeration
Aeration is another way you can keep your lawn healthy. Aeration creates lots of tiny holes that penetrate the soil’s surface. This allows nutrients, water and air to get down to the grass’ roots and have the best impact possible on your lawn. This is usually best done once a year, but every lawn is different, so a lawn care expert can best advise on what yours needs.
Scarification
Scarification removes old thatch from the lawn. Thatch is old grass and dead plants which at times can be helpful – giving nutrients back into your live lawn – but if too much builds up it can stunt growth and impact lawn health. Scarification also removes moss growth and gives the grass more space to grow. Different grass types will produce different amounts of thatch, impacting how often your lawn needs scarifying in order to stay healthy. Generally speaking, it’s usually around once a year.
Overseeding
Overseeding helps to fill out your lawn. New seeds are sown to repair damaged areas and fill in any patches. It ensures that your lawn as a whole stays as thick and as healthy as possible. It’s done alongside aeration or scarification to make sure all the treatments have maximum effect.
