Q&A with Bob Nash from Greensleeves Newbury

How long have you been with Greensleeves?

I have been with Greensleeves for 11 years.

Who else is on your team?

There are three members of the team. I look after all the scheduling, queries, admin and accounts, as well as the odd treatment. Clive, who has been with me since 2015, looks after most of the spray treatments as well as some of the mechanicals such as scarifying and aeration. Craig, who has been with me part-time for two years, does nothing but mechanical treatments.

What’s the most unusual obstacle you’ve had to overcome, i.e. steepest/biggest/roughest lawn?

We have a couple of lawns that need scarifying every year, but access is extremely tight. We have to carry the machine at a particular angle to get to the lawn.

Are you a dog or a cat person? (Or anything else!)

I have two dogs – a Springer Spaniel who is obsessed with balls and a Jackwawa (Jack Russell/Chihuahua cross) who rules the roost!

What’s the best thing about your job?

Seeing lawns that have been neglected for years transformed into lush green lawns.

Why did you choose to specialise in lawns?

I had always looked after my own lawns and used to joke with friends about my “show lawns”… so when I was made redundant, I looked for a complete change and was looking at various franchises. I was lucky enough to come across Greensleeves at a franchise show.

Which is your favourite season to work in?

My favourite season is the spring, when the lawns recover from winter and are full of new growth and vigour.

What do you like to listen to in your van?

Radio 4.

Which is your favourite service station?

The best service station is the Sainsbury’s in Wantage. For some reason it is cheaper, even than all the other Sainsbury’s in my area and the staff are always friendly.

What’s your favourite post-work snack or lunch item?

A good Cornish pasty goes down well.

Are you a tea or coffee person? Or something else entirely?

I normally have one large coffee first-thing and then decaf tea the rest of the time, but I do drink a fair amount of mineral water.
